Second Stripe White Belt Promotion Requirements
Knowledge
1. What does Karate mean? Open or empty hand.
2. What is our style of karate? Isshinryu Karate
3. What does Isshinryu mean? One Heart Way.
4. What is our work out area called? Dojo
5. What do we call our black belt instructors? Sensei (which means teacher)
6. Isshinryu comes from Okinawa.
7. Master Tatsuo Shimabuku, 10 Dan (10th degree black belt) is the founder of our style.
8. Know 3 Directions: Left = Hidari, Right = Migi, Forward = Mae (Pronounced as Mie)
9. Count to 10 in Japanese. We say it: 1 - itchi, 2 - ni, 3 - san, 4 - shi, 5 - go, 6 - rok, 7 - sheets, 8 - hotsh, 9 - ku, 10 - ju. We spell it: itchi, ni, san, shi, go , roko, sheetshe, hotshe, ku, ju.
Skills:
1. Demonstrate improved Hidari seisan dachi (left foot forward stance), Migi seisan dachi (right foot forward stance),
2. Demonstrate a Seiken (straight punch) and explain what part of the fist makes contact (first two knuckles). A Seiken is a straight punch. From the hip. It strikes at the center chest of someone your own size and then recoils to a position similar to that of a chest block. (The arm does not rotate as it does in some styles and the thumb is on top of the fist) The opposite fist will be on the hip.
3. Demonstrate Mae keage geri (front snap kick), Know what part of the foot you strike with in a Mae keage geri (Ball of the foot = Koshi). Snap kick the knee raises. Then the lower leg extends. Pulling the toes back strike with the ball of the foot. The foot comes back then the knee lowers stepping back into your stance.
4. Demonstrate Fumikomi geri (stomping heal kick) Know what part of the foot you strike with, the heel (Kakuto). Lift the knee high, then with a thrusting action stomp downward. Lift the knee high again and step back into a stance.
5. Demonstrate a Gedan uke (leg block). With a tight fist. The blocking hand is high on the chest little finger side towards your chest. Blocking arm moves downward across body, stopping about 4 inches in front of the thigh. With the back of arm (Both bones) blocking.
6. Demonstrate Chudan (chest block). With the blocking hand held in a tight fist, low in front of the groin area towards the opposite hip. Little finger side of the fist facing to the front. Block by moving the arm upward in a semi-circular motion across the chest area. Stopping with the block in a the same place as a guard position just at the outside of the body. Block with the arm in a position where both bones of the arm make contact. The opposite fist will be on the hip.
7. Demonstrate a loud Kiai (yell),
8. Demonstrate Seiuchin Dachi (Horse stance)
9. Self Defense - break away from a wrist grab.
10. Demonstrate Taikyoku I (The first half of the kata ) with good posture and stances.
