Isshinryu Blocks

Blocking Techniques (Uke Waza)

All Basic Isshinryu blocks make contact with the lower part of the arm. The arm is in a position where both bones of the arm contact the target at the same time. Not just the little finger side of the arm. This not only adds power to the block, it protects the blocking arm. By aligning the arm so that both bones strike at the same time, it reduces the chance that one of the bones could be broken. Our basic blocks are considered to be attacking techniques against an opponents arm.

What we watch for when testing

With all of the basic blocks. The block will be on the same side as the foot that is forward. Example Right foot forward, right hand block.

Proper hand position with tight fist, using both bones of arm back of wrist towards blocking direction.

Stop block in correct position, don't reach out past your body. Opposite fist will be on your hip.

Stay in a good stance, don't lean forward, don't come up on your toes.
