Knowledge

1. Isshinryu comes from Okinawa.

2. Master Tatsuo Shimabuku, 10 Dan (10th degree black belt) is the founder of our style.

3. What does Karate mean?      Open or empty hand.

4. What is our style of karate?  Isshinryu Karate

5. What does Isshinryu mean?  One Heart Way.

6. What is our work out area called?  Dojo

7. What do we call our black belt instructors?  Sensei (which means teacher)

8. Know Commands for coming to attention and bowing: ki ot skay and rei.

9. Know The kicking parts of the foot: koshi (ball), sokuto (blade edge), kakato (heel)

10. Know the 3 areas of the body: jodan (upper), chudan (middle section), gedan (lower section)

11. Know 5 Directions: Left = Hidari,  Right = Migi,  Forward = Mae (Pronounced as Mie)   Backwards = ushiro,  Side = yoko

12. Count to 10 in Japanese. We say it: 1 - itchi, 2 - ni, 3 - san, 4 - shi, 5 - go, 6 - rok, 7 - sheets, 8 -   hotsh, 9 - ku, 10 - ju. We spell it: itchi, ni, san, shi, go , roko, sheetshe, hotshe, ku, ju.

 

Skills:

1. Demonstrate Taikyoku I (Complete Kata with good posture and correct technique

2. Demonstrate Gedan Uke (Chest Block)

3. Demonstrate Chudan Uke (Chest Block)

4. Demonstrate Jodan Uke (Head Block)

5. Demonstrate Age Tsuki Seiken (Rising Punch)     

     6. Self Defense - Break away from a bear hug.(With bear hug break Cat Stance and Elbow.  

     7. Self Defense - Break away from a wrist grab.

8. Demonstrate Hidari seisan dachi (left foot forward stance), Migi seisan dachi (right foot   forward stance),

9. Demonstrate a Seiken (straight punch) and explain what part of the fist makes contact (first two knuckles). A Seiken is a straight punch. From the hip. It strikes at the center chest of someone your own size and then recoils to a position similar to that of a chest block. (The arm does not rotate as it does in some styles and the thumb is on top of the fist) The opposite fist should be on the hip.

10. Demonstrate Seiuchin Dachi (Horse stance) Remember keep your knees bent and toes pointed outward.

11. Demonstrate Mae keage geri (front snap kick), Know what part of the foot you strike with in a Mae keage geri (ball of the foot).

12. Demonstrate Fumikomi geri (stomping heal kick) Know what part of the foot you strike with, the heel (Kakuto). Lift the knee high, then with a thrusting action stomp downward. Lift the knee high again and step back into a stance.

13. Demonstrate Yoko kekomi geri (side thrust kick) Know what part of the foot you strike with, the outside edge at the heel end (Sokuto). Raise knee foot close to the supporting leg. With a thrusting (pushing) action kick to the side. Then withdraw the leg in a reverse direction. Back to the raised position, before stepping back into a stance.
